Butch Hays, born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, honed his basketball skills in a challenging environment, eventually becoming the all-time assists leader for the California Golden Bears by the end of his college career in 1984. That same year, Hays was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Draft with the 141st pick, a draft that famously introduced Michael Jordan to the league.

Hays made a significant impact in the NBL, beginning with the Adelaide 36ers, where he earned All-NBL Second Team honors in 1991. His journey then took him to the Illawarra Hawks in 1993, where he quickly won over fans with his professionalism and consistently high-level performances. In his first season with the Hawks, Hays averaged 18.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game, leading the team to a sixth-place finish with a 15-11 record and earning a position on the All-NBL Second Team. His versatility as a guard was on full display, as he seamlessly balanced scoring, playmaking, and defense.

The following year, Hays elevated his game further, averaging 21 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. Despite his strong individual performance, the Hawks finished in tenth place with a 13/13 record. Hays' efforts were recognized once again as he was named to the All-NBL Second Team.

Known for his unselfish playing style, Hays was a true playmaker, averaging 5.8 assists and 2.5 steals per game during his time with the Hawks. His ability to control the tempo of the game and contribute defensively made him a key figure on the court. He was also easily recognisable by his iconic high socks, which became a trademark of his on-court look.

After his time with the Hawks, Hays continued his NBL career with stints at Newcastle, North Melbourne, and a return to Newcastle, before briefly coming out of retirement as a 40-year-old with the Canberra Cannons in the 2002/03 season.

Butch Hays remains a beloved figure in Hawks history, remembered not just for his skills and leadership on the court, but also for his charisma, professionalism, and ever-present smile.
