Mee joined the Wollongong Hawks a few years after being involved in one of the most memorable moments in NBL history—when Damon Lowery's clutch free throws sent the Hawks into the Grand Final, a game where Mee was on the receiving end of the foul.
His arrival in Wollongong added a defensive steel and leadership that became central to the Hawks’ identity during his time at the club. Over 71 games, Mee scored over 1,000 points, averaging 14 per game — a testament to his ability to contribute offensively when needed. But it was his defence and playmaking that truly set him apart.
Widely regarded as one of the NBL’s elite perimeter defenders, Mee averaged 2 steals per game and often drew the toughest defensive assignments. He joined forces with noted wing defenders Glen Saville and Mat Campbell to form one of the most formidable defensive trios in the league. Mee was also a standout facilitator and rebounder, averaging over 5 boards and 6 assists per game, routinely initiating offence and controlling tempo. A floor general in the truest sense, Mee’s presence elevated those around him, and his unflinching competitiveness set a standard that left a lasting mark on the Hawks’ culture.

Mee’s time with the Hawks was highlighted by his selection to the All-NBL Team in 2005 and his crowning achievement that same year—winning the NBL Best Defensive Player award.
Darnell Mee’s defensive mastery was not limited to his time with the Hawks. Over his illustrious NBL career, Mee was recognized as one of the greatest defensive players in the league’s history. He won the NBL Best Defensive Player award five times, showcasing his unparalleled ability to lock down opponents and disrupt offenses. His contributions went beyond just defense, as he was also named to the All-NBL First Team twice, underlining his overall excellence as a player.
During his time with the Hawks, Mee solidified his reputation as a versatile and intelligent player who could influence the game in multiple ways. His scoring, rebounding, playmaking, and defensive skills made him a vital part of the Hawks' success.
Darnell Mee’s legacy with the Wollongong Hawks is one of versatility, leadership, and defensive excellence. His contributions to the Hawks, and the NBL as a whole, have left an enduring mark, making him one of the most respected and celebrated players in the league’s history.
