Clarke’s journey to the NBL and the Illawarra Hawks began with a storied college career in the United States. Known for his lethal three-point shooting, Clarke's reputation preceded him, making waves long before he ever set foot on Australian soil.

When he arrived in Wollongong for the 2014 season, the expectations were sky-high, and Clarke delivered in spades.

Under the tutelage of Coach Gordie McLeod, Clarke's debut season with the Hawks was nothing short of spectacular. He quickly established himself as the team’s offensive catalyst, leading the charge with his impeccable shooting and relentless energy. Clarke's ability to drain threes from seemingly impossible angles made him a nightmare for opposing defenses and a hero to the Hawks faithful. His performance throughout the season was so dominant that he was named the NBL MVP and earned a spot on the All-NBL First Team, an extraordinary feat for a debutant straight out of college.

After a brief hiatus from the NBL, Clarke returned to the Hawks for the 2016/2017 season, this time under Coach Rob Beveridge. Many players might struggle to reclaim their former glory after time away, but not Clarke.

Upon his return, he seamlessly transitioned into a new role as the team’s sixth man, a move that highlighted not only his scoring ability but also his maturity and understanding of the game.

As the Hawks' dynamic sixth man, Clarke provided an explosive scoring option off the bench, frequently turning the tide of games with his instant offense. His impact was so significant that he was named the NBL’s Best Sixth Man in 2017, further solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s most versatile and valuable players.

Clarke’s time with the Illawarra Hawks is perhaps best remembered for his ability to consistently deliver when it mattered most. He tied the club record for the second-most three-pointers made in a single game, knocking down nine threes in a single outing, a testament to his unwavering confidence and deadly accuracy from beyond the arc.

Over 89 games with the Hawks, Clarke averaged an impressive 18.8 points per game, with a remarkable 38.4% shooting accuracy from three-point range.

Clarke's contributions to the Hawks were recognized with two Club MVP titles, a fitting acknowledgment of his influence both on and off the court. His ability to adapt from being the league MVP in his debut season to embracing a new role as a sixth man underscored his versatility and commitment to the team’s success.

Rotnei Clarke’s legacy with the Illawarra Hawks extends beyond the numbers and accolades. He symbolizes the impact that international talent can have in the NBL, particularly for a storied club like the Hawks. Clarke’s journey is a testament to the power of adaptability, the importance of leadership, and the enduring value of a player who can consistently put points on the board.
