In their inaugural season, the Illawarra Hawks were one of the ten founding teams of the newly formed National Basketball League (NBL). Playing out of the Snakepit at Beaton Park, the Hawks finished eighth, managing five wins in their debut campaign. Despite their struggles, the season laid the groundwork for the club's future in Australian basketball. ​
