The 1986 season featured a grudge match for the ages, with the Illawarra Hawks at the centre of one of the most controversial moments in NBL history. Early in the season, the Hawks edged out the West Sydney Westars by a single point. However, the victory was called into question after the Westars lodged multiple protests, citing a three-pointer incorrectly recorded as a two-point basket. In a rare move, the NBL ordered the game to be replayed later in the season.
That rematch took place on September 17, 1986, at the Snakepit, with a packed house creating an electric atmosphere. The Hawks found themselves trailing 26-14 after the first quarter, but in typical Hawks fashion, they fought back with grit and determination, ultimately securing another dramatic 1-point victory (watch below).
Just a week later, the Hawks faced the Westars again in the elimination final, winning convincingly and putting an end to the drama.
That 1986 season saw the Hawks finish fifth with a solid 15-11 record, under the guidance of new coach Dave Lindstrom. Although their playoff run ended in the semifinals with a loss to Adelaide, the campaign was a turning point for the club, laying the foundation for the greater success that awaited them in 1987.
