The Hawks couldn't replicate the magic of the previous year, finishing the 1988 season in seventh place with an 11-13 record. Despite their best efforts, the team was unable to qualify for the playoffs, marking a disappointing end to what had been a promising era under coach Dave Lindstrom. The Hawks would soon face a period of transition as they sought to regain their competitive edge.
