The 1996 season was a rebuilding year for the Hawks as they adjusted to life without key figures Alan Black and Melvin Thomas. Under new coach Brendan Joyce, the team struggled to find consistency, finishing 10th with a 9-17 record. It marked the start of a challenging period as the club worked to reestablish itself as a competitive force in the NBL.

Despite the tough year, one game stood out: a 145-121 victory over the Sydney Kings.

For many fans, the sentiment was, “I don’t care how we go this year, as long as we beat Sydney.”

The game was a breakout performance for Illawarra junior Terry Johnson, who erupted for 41 points (16/20 FG) and 13 assists against their archrivals, delivering one of the season's few bright spots.

In 1996, Mat Campbell joined the team, known for his tireless work ethic, defence and sharp perimeter shooting. Campbell would go on to Captain the Hawks, become a Championship winner, "Save the Hawks", and post retirement the General Manager.
