The year 1998 is notable for the Illawarra Hawks as it marked their last season playing at "The Snakepit" (Beaton Park), before moving to the Wollongong Entertainment Centre.
The team, led by coach Brendan Joyce and captain Clayton Ritter, posted a 14-16 record, finishing 6th, and made a return to the playoffs after a period of struggle. Despite losing in the elimination finals to Perth (0–2), the season was seen as a positive turning point for the club, as they started rebuilding their reputation in the NBL.
A memorable moment from that season was the Hawks winning their final regular season game at The Snakepit in front of a packed crowd against Townsville, marking an emotional farewell to their historic home court.
