NBL Awards

NBL Coach of the Year:

2009/10, 2013/14

As an Illawarra junior representative, McLeod quickly distinguished himself as a standout talent, eventually becoming a key figure for the Hawks in the NBL. Known for his exceptional speed, particularly in the first half of his playing career,

McLeod was a blur on the court, especially when leading fast breaks. His quickness and ability to transition from defense to offense with lightning speed made him one of the most exciting players to watch. McLeod wasn’t just fast—he was a playmaker of the highest order.

His vision and passing ability were unrivaled, as evidenced by his league-leading assists in 1984, 1985, and 1987. His knack for setting up his teammates was a cornerstone of the Hawks' offense, making him the engine that drove the team.

McLeod's talent wasn't confined to the domestic stage. He represented Australia at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, a significant achievement that highlighted his skills on an international level. Competing against the world’s best, McLeod showcased the talent that made him one of the NBL’s top guards and brought pride to his country and his club.

After hanging up his sneakers, McLeod didn’t stray far from the game. He transitioned seamlessly into coaching with the Australian Institute of Sport, then into the NBL with West Sydney Razorbacks and Singapore Slingers, before taking the helm of then Wollongong Hawks (all of McLeod's games as a player were under the Illawarra name, and Wollongong as a coach) and making an immediate impact.

In his first season as head coach, McLeod guided the team to the 2009/10 NBL Grand Final, demonstrating his ability to lead and inspire from the sidelines just as he had done on the court. His tactical acumen and leadership were key to the Hawks' success during this period, earning him respect as one of the top coaches in the league.

His jersey now hangs in the rafters, a permanent reminder of his impact on the club and the sport.

Gordie McLeod’s legacy with the Illawarra Hawks is profound. His speed, playmaking ability, and leadership have left a lasting impression on the club and its fans.
