In the 1983 season, Steurer showcased his scoring prowess, averaging 23.7 points per game while shooting an impressive 56.8% from the field and 80.2% from the free-throw line. His ability to score efficiently was complemented by his work on the boards, where he contributed 5.4 rebounds per game, making him a vital two-way player for the Hawks.
Steurer continued to excel in the 1984 season, nearly matching his previous scoring output with 23.6 points per game.
Although his field goal percentage dipped slightly to 51.2%, he increased his impact on the glass, averaging 8.2 rebounds per game. His all-around performance was highlighted by career highs during his time with the Hawks, including 39 points, 15 rebounds, 9 assists, and 6 steals in individual games.
After his successful run with the Hawks, Steurer continued his NBL career with a season at the Sydney Supersonics.
Steurer’s time with the Illawarra Hawks in the early 1980s was marked by his consistent scoring, efficient shooting, and ability to contribute across the stat sheet, making him a key figure in the team’s history during that period.
