Jones was a pure scorer, widely regarded as one of the best shooters the NBL has ever seen. Standing at 195cm, the Alabama-born forward had an offensive arsenal that included deadly fade-away jumpers and thunderous dunks, making him a nightmare for defenders.
His scoring ability was unmatched, and he still holds the top two scoring seasons in Hawks history: an incredible 32.7 points per game in 1983 and 30.5 points per game in another season.
Over his three seasons with the Hawks, Jones averaged a remarkable 28.7 points per game with an impressive 51% shooting accuracy, further cementing his status as a dominant force on the court.
In addition to his scoring prowess, Jones was also a fan favorite. With his infectious smile, charisma, iconic early 80s sideburns, and thrilling style of play, he quickly became a beloved figure at the Snakepit.
Jones’s impact on Wollongong basketball was profound. His high-scoring seasons not only led the league but also helped elevate the profile of basketball in the region, drawing fans to the game and establishing the Hawks as a key part of the local sports landscape. Even after he left the Hawks to return to the U.S. and play semi-pro basketball, Jones’s legacy endured. His combination of scoring brilliance, athleticism, and charm made him one of the most memorable players in NBL history.
